Tournament rules

This is a friendly community tournament. The main goal is to give CERGE-EI people a chance to meet, have fun, and connect outside normal work and study. Competition is welcome, but friendliness, flexibility, fairness, and good sportsmanship come first.

Group stage

  • Seven groups of six players.
  • Each player plays every other player in their group exactly once: five matches per player.
  • Group-stage matches are best of five games; each game is played to 11 points.
  • A game must be won by two points. At 10-10, play continues until one player leads by two.
  • The published date and time are the default appointment. Players may change them by mutual agreement.
  • If possible, keep rescheduled matches close to the original week so the standings remain easy to follow.

Serve & basic playing rules

  • Serve alternates every two points. At 10-10, serve alternates every point.
  • For the first game, decide the first server and first end by a simple toss, coin flip, or similar method.
  • The player who serves first in one game receives first in the next game.
  • Change ends after every game.
  • If a legal serve touches the net and still lands correctly, replay the serve.
  • A ball touching the top edge is in; a ball hitting only the vertical side is out.
  • For outside interference, such as another ball entering the playing area, call a let and replay the point.

Ranking

  1. Match wins
  2. Win rate
  3. Set ratio
  4. Point differential

If players remain exactly tied after all four ranking criteria, the Sports Representative will resolve the tie fairly, consulting the players involved if useful.

Eligibility & qualification

  • A player must complete at least three group-stage matches to be eligible for the knockout stage.
  • The top two eligible players in each group qualify automatically: 14 players.
  • The two best eligible third-place finishers across the seven groups receive the two wild-card places.
  • The knockout stage therefore begins with 16 players.
  • Knockout-stage matches are best of five games; each game is played to 11 points.

Rescheduling & forfeits

  • If the scheduled time does not work, contact your opponent directly and agree on another time.
  • Academic and personal commitments come first; reasonable flexibility is part of the league.
  • If the ping-pong room is being used for a class or another scheduled CERGE-EI activity, please reschedule the match. The class or scheduled activity comes first.
  • If a match becomes difficult to arrange after a few attempts, contact the Sports Representative and we can help find a workable solution.
  • A forfeit counts as one match played, with a win for one player and a loss for the other.
  • No artificial sets or points are added for a forfeit.

Results & standings

  • After the match, the winner should enter the result in the shared Google Sheet.
  • Please enter the actual game scores so the standings can calculate set ratio and point differential correctly.
  • For a forfeit, use the forfeit field and do not invent game or point scores.
  • The website shows the latest schedule, standings, groups, and results.

Sportsmanship & the shared room

  • Please play in a friendly and respectful spirit. The league is also a chance to meet people across CERGE-EI outside the usual work or study setting.
  • For small disagreements, talk it through and use common sense - for example, replay a point if both players are happy with that.
  • If something more serious comes up, contact the Sports Representative and we will try to find a fair solution together.
  • The table tennis room is a shared CERGE-EI space. Classes and other scheduled CERGE-EI activities have priority; if one is using the room, please reschedule your match. Please also be considerate of others and leave the room tidy afterwards.

This Rules page follows the participant manual. If a rule needs clarification during the tournament, the Sports Representative will communicate the update to participants.

How to change your match time

Our league is meant to be friendly and flexible, not an extra source of pressure. Classes, work, research, and personal responsibilities come first. The dates on the website are simply a starting point to help everyone organize their matches.

Be patient with each other. 💙

Sometimes someone is busy, slow to reply, or it takes a few messages to find a time that works for both people. That's completely normal! Please give your opponent time to respond and keep trying kindly. A forfeit is only a last resort in exceptional cases, not a penalty for being busy. If scheduling becomes genuinely difficult, contact the Sports Representative and we'll help.

If a class or another scheduled CERGE-EI activity needs the ping-pong room, the class or activity comes first — simply find another time for the match.

Talk to your opponent

Message or speak with your opponent and agree on a new date and time that suit both of you. Please don't change the time without checking with them first.

Open the Google Sheet

Use the button at the bottom of this page. In the Sheet, choose the tab called Schedule (not “Results recording” or “Standing”).

Find your match

Look for the row containing both your name and your opponent's name under Player 1 and Player 2 (columns E and F). Double-check you've found the correct match.

Change the date and time

In that same row, change only Date (column B) and Time (column C) to your newly agreed appointment. Keep the date in the same format as the other dates, and enter the time like 16:00 (24-hour clock).

You can use Reschedule / Note (column G) if a short explanation is useful, but it is optional. Leave Week, Group, Player 1 and Player 2 unchanged.

EXAMPLE ONLY — YOUR OWN MATCH MAY BE DIFFERENT
Alex vs SamSame match, new agreed time
BEFORE
Date · Column B3 Nov 2026
Time · Column C14:30
AFTER
Date · Column B5 Nov 2026
Time · Column C16:00

Alex and Sam have both agreed to play on 5 November at 16:00. They edit the Date and Time cells in their existing Schedule row — nothing else.

You're done — check the website!

Google Sheets saves your edits automatically. The tournament website reads the updated Schedule sheet, so the new appointment should appear there too. Return to Schedule on the website and refresh the page to see the change.

If the change doesn't appear or you accidentally edited the wrong row, please let the Sports Representative know so we can help.

Agreed on a new time?

Open the shared Google Sheet, select “Schedule”, and edit the date and time for your match.

Open Google Sheet to change schedule

On a phone? Scroll sideways in Google Sheets if the columns don't all fit. The Google Sheets app may make editing easier.

Can't agree on a time? It's okay to take a little longer. Please keep communicating kindly, and ask the Sports Representative for help if needed.

Remember: Only edit your own match's date and time, after both players agree. Don't delete or move rows.

How to record your match score

Just finished a match? Great! Follow these steps. You will enter the result in the Google Sheet — the website is here to show you how.

Open the Google Sheet

Use the button at the bottom of this guide. In the Sheet, select the tab called Results recording (not “Standing” or “Schedule”).

Find your match

Look for the row showing both players' names. Pay attention to who is listed as Player 1 (column E) and Player 2 (column F).

Type the scores, one game at a time

Enter each finished game in Score Set 1–5 (columns G–K), using a normal dash like 8-11. Always write Player 1's points first, then Player 2's points. Don't put the winner's points first unless the winner happens to be Player 1.

Because matches are best of 5, stop when somebody wins 3 games. Leave unused score cells empty.

EXAMPLE ONLY — DO NOT TYPE THIS INTO THE SHEET
PLAYER 1Alex vs PLAYER 2Sam
Set 18-11Sam wins
Set 211-7Alex wins
Set 311-9Alex wins
Set 411-6Alex wins
Set 5—Leave blank

Why is Set 1 written 8-11? Because Alex is Player 1 and scored 8 points, while Sam is Player 2 and scored 11. Alex then wins the next three games, so Alex wins the match 3–1.

Choose the match winner

In Winner (column L), click the dropdown and select the player who won 3 games. In our example, choose Alex.

Set Score (column M) updates automatically — you do not need to type the final 3–1 yourself.

That's it — you're done!

Google Sheets saves your changes automatically. You can return to the tournament website and refresh to check the latest results and standings.

Ready to enter your real result?

Open the shared Sheet, go to “Results recording”, and fill in your match.

Open Google Sheet to record score

On a phone? The Google Sheet is wide, so scroll sideways to find columns G–M. The Google Sheets app may make editing easier.

A match was forfeited or something looks wrong? Please contact the Sports Representative rather than inventing game scores. The forfeit field is handled separately.

Please leave the other columns alone. In particular, don't overwrite the players' names or the automatic Set Score formula.
